As an Occupational Therapist and co-founder of Alta Medical. I’ve worked with hundreds of patients with lymphedema over the years, and I know living with edema poses unique challenges. With the right strategies, you can manage your condition and enjoy back living your life. Here are a few of my personal suggestions...
Talk with your therapist
Really talk with them. Ask questions, get clear answers and talk through challenges and obstacles. It’s important.
Get moving
Regular, low-impact exercise can work wonders for managing lymphedema symptoms. Activities like walking, swimming, pilates, and yoga promote circulation, reduce swelling and improve flexibility without putting a lot of strain on the body. Exercise is also great for your overall emotional wellbeing. Of course, you’ll want to consult with your therapist or another medical professional before starting an exercise program.
Take care of your skin
Maintaining healthy skin is crucial, and it is incredibly important to keep your skin clean and moisturized. Also, promptly treat any cuts or abrasions to prevent infection.
Wear your Compression Wrap
They work, but only if you wear them. If you find them challenging to wear, reach out to your therapist … or to us. We’re here to help.
Reach out for support
You’re not alone, and you don’t have to navigate this alone. Have open discussions with your Doctor and Therapist. Find a support group. Consider a cancer survivor support group or a lymphedema support group. Engage in the field of lymphology and participate in advocacy groups. Don't be afraid to look online for a group that might interest you!
